An Intro Into How Decaf Is Made, Naturally!
Share
Ever sit with a cup of decaf and wonder—how do they take the caffeine out but keep the flavour in? It’s a fair question. Most people don’t know how decaf is made. They just know they want to sleep tonight, or savour something smooth without the side effects.
But here’s the thing: great decaf isn’t an afterthought. It’s an art.
Surprisingly, decaf can be made using just water, time, and a little natural cleverness. That’s how we do it at Decaf Savvy—every bean in our range is decaffeinated naturally, using methods that protect flavour and honour craft.
Our own decaf journey started with curiosity. Like many, we wanted something to sip in the afternoon that didn’t mess with our rhythm. But we didn’t want bland. We wanted bold, complex, memorable coffee. That’s when we learned how decaf is really made—and how much care goes into doing it right.
Take the Swiss Water Process, used in our Brazil Safira house decaf. It’s like a reset for the bean. Caffeine is gently removed using pure water, with the coffee’s character preserved throughout. Nothing added. Nothing taken away that doesn’t need to go. The result is a cup that feels full of life—just a little calmer.
Then there’s the Mountain Water Process, used in our Mexico Turquesa. It’s done high in the Mexican mountains, using local spring water to gently extract the caffeine. The process protects the bean’s original shape and flavour. It’s slow, intentional, and you can taste the care in every sip.
Finally, our premium Colombia Tumbaga uses the Sugarcane Process—a beautiful fusion of science and nature. This method uses a compound derived from sugarcane, combined with spring water, to remove caffeine. The result? A naturally sweet, rounded flavour that’s incredibly satisfying. You’d never guess it was decaf—and you wouldn’t care.
At Decaf Savvy, we believe decaf deserves the same care, craft, and creativity as any great coffee. Our house range is built around natural processes because they honour the bean, the farmer, and you—the person holding the mug. All our partner roasters follow these same principles, using only natural methods.
So next time you brew, you’re not just making coffee. You’re tasting the quiet genius of water, time, and nature.
Later in this series, we’ll dive deeper into each of these processes and show you what’s really going on behind the scenes.
